Have you ever been to the dairy case at your local supermarket and looked onward in confusion at all the different choices of yogurt? Which one tastes better? Which one looks better? Which one has less sugar? Should I choose flavored or plain? Organic or not? Is Greek the best way to go? Should I get a big container or individual ones? Does this one have probiotics in it? What are probiotics, anyway? Full fat or low-fat? What the heck is kefir?! I have had many of these question cross my mind when staring at the yogurt case…and I’m a dietitian!
There are so many options to choose from and so many front-of-the-label claims, it’s hard to know which is best. While I say all things in moderation, this is what I typically recommend to look for in a yogurt:
- no artifical colors
- no artificial sweeteners
- low in sugar (≤15 grams per serving)
- high in protein (≥10 grams per serving)
- easy to read ingredients list
- added probiotics
While the USDA recommends low- or non-fat dairy products, depending on the individual and their circumstances, I usually let them choose their preference for fat content. Most of the time I opt for the large containers of plain non-fat yogurt and mix in my own fruit and sweetener, I sometimes mix it up with the flavored varieties and higher fat content. One brand that I can always count on to check pretty much everything off the list of what to look for in a yogurt is siggi’s icelandic-style skyr.
siggi’s is a bit thicker and creamier than other yogurts, and is less tart than Greek yogurt. Every serving of siggi’s icelandic-style skyr yogurt contains more grams of protein than it does sugar…which rings true with their motto: simple ingredients, not a lot of sugar. They do not use any artificial colorings, flavors, or high fructose corn syrup. siggi’s is also made with probiotics, or “good” bacteria, that have been found to improve gut health and immunity. And did I mention it tastes amazing?! Plus, they have a great variety of flavors and fat content for you to choose from!
This past September when I traveled to Vermont for Blog Brûlée, we were lucky enough to have a presentation by Siggi himself! He talked about how he started his business, what makes siggi’s yogurt unique, and did a hands-on demonstration of how to make skyr! It was pretty neat. Oh, and of course he brought with him some siggi’s yogurt for us to enjoy! So. Good.
